25 August 2011: Busbridge Teams League

The Busbridge Teams League is a long established club competition for teams of four players.

Matches are played over the winter months, with most being held on the 2nd Tuesday when the club is closed. The winning team holds the Redmen trophy for twelve months and Master Points are awarded.

Matches are played in members homes and are competitive as well as friendly: hospitality usually includes sandwiches and a glass of wine.

Entries will be taken at the end of the summer for matches to commence from September. Before then please try and get a team together; alternatively if you are looking for other members to make up a team of four, Gay will endeavour to assist.

Our Dealing Machine arrived very quickly and was used for the first time today to prepare hands and printed records for this evening's session.

18 January 2011

At the Special General Meeting held on 17 January, members voted by a significant majority (54 in favour to 20 against, inclusive of proxies) to proceed with the purchase of a Dealing Machine.

The order has now been placed and we are fortunate to find that the supplier has a machine in stock which is being shipped to us immediately. We should be able to resume the use of computer dealt hands by next week.

Message from Tony Longrigg, Chairman: BDBC Special General Meeting 17 January

On 23 November I sent out the report on the results of our trial of Machine Dealing. It is now time for the members of the club to decide whether or not to purchase a Dealing Machine for permanent use.

To make this decision we are holding an SGM on Monday 17 January 2011 at 7.30pm (to be followed by a shortened session of bridge). I have attached a formal notice of the meeting (click to download) which also sets out the cost implications. Paper copies will also be available at the club.

I hope as many members as possible will attend the meeting to help us make this important decision. However, if you are unable to attend in person but wish to vote on the proposal, please contact Gay Davies. She will vote at the meeting as your proxy according to your wishes.

12 June 2009: BDBC and EBU Pay to Play

The recent survey of members showed a clear majority in favour of affiliation, amongst both EBU members and non EBU members. Accordingly, the committee has decided that the club should remain affiliated to the EBU after the introduction of P2P in April 2010.

Members also showed a clear majority preference for remaining with a Flat Rate subscription.

11 June 2009: Wilson Trophy

From 2009, the Wilson Trophy will be awarded to the member achieving the best results over the full year, running from April 2009 to the end of March 2010.

To qualify, members must play at least 30 times on Pairs evenings at the club during the year. Each player's overall ranking will be based on the average of their best 20 results.

The Wilson trophy was presented to the club by Chris Wilson, the founder. The winner will be awarded the trophy at the club's AGM in April 2010.

At the EGM of the English Bridge Union held on Wednesday 4th June the Members voted on the Board's "Pay to Play" proposals.

The voting results were 52 in favour and 31 against the proposals. Surrey County Bridge Association cast its 4 votes against the proposals, in line with the views of BDBC and other local clubs.

The changes will now be defined in detail, taking effect from 1st April 2010; during the intervening period there will be no changes to existing methods of subscription. This provides adequate time for BDBC to make any decisions about its future.

1 June 2008

In the finals of the Wanborough Cup, the Busbridge team (Gerald, Niki, John and Johanna) finished equal 6th in a field of 20. The trophy was won by Farnham Bridge Club.

The 2008 AGM was held on Tuesday 22nd April at 19.30.

• The new committee was duly appointed.
• The subscription level for 2007-2008 was fixed at £40.
• The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice was selected as the club charity for 2007-2008.
• The club's response to the final version of the EBU Strategy Proposal was agreed, subject to final wording by John and Gerald.

11 October 2007: Christmas Party

The Christmas party on Tuesday 4th December will feature the usual sit-down cold buffet meal, with wine, bridge and prizes. The cost per person is £7.00 which includes a raffle ticket. Partners are not necessary.

There is a a limited number of places available, so to avoid disappointment if you wish to attend please add your name to the list which will be on the notice board from Friday onwards. Make your payment to John Spiers as soon as possible.

Refunds cannot not be made after 23rd November.

The 2007 AGM was held on Tuesday 24th April 2007 at 7.30 pm.

Full details will follow in the minutes, but in summary

• The new committee was duly appointed.
• The proposal to consider the purchase of a dealing machine was rejected.
• The proposal concerning start times was accepted after being amended to give the director discretion to fix the movement at any time after 7.20pm.
• The subscription level for 2007-2008 was fixed at £35 and the visitor fee at £2.50.
• Headway Surrey was selected as the club charity for 2007-2008.

Commencing April 2007, the club will issue Master Points electronically. EBU members will see their points credited quarterly. Any non-EBU member who subsequently wishes to join the EBU will be able to request their points for the prior 3 years.
